What is autorun inf?

Autorun.inf is a small Windows operating system file that instructs the operating system what action to take when a removable storage device or CD/DVD is inserted in the computer's CD/DVD drive. The autorun file is written in a plaintext format and usually contains the following information:

  1. The name of the application or file that should be automatically run when the device is inserted.

  2. The name of the icon that should be displayed for the device.

  3. Information on any related files or scripts that should be run along with the application.

  4. Any special instructions or options that should be used when running the application.

The autorun file is commonly used to automatically launch an installation program or an application that is stored on a removable storage device. This can be helpful for users who want to quickly install software or access files without having to manually navigate through the device's file system. However, the autorun feature has also been used by malware creators to automatically launch malicious software and infect computers with malware. For this reason, Microsoft has disabled the autorun feature on many devices for security reasons.
